Athletics ahead of other Indian sports in WADA’s 2017 doping blacklist

Athletics has topped the latest World Anti-Doping-Agency (WADA) list as compared to other Indian sports. Among 3,147 urine and blood samples tested by National Anti-Doping-Agency (NADA) during the last year (2017), 21 out of the 71 positive offenders (across all sports) were from athletics.

The percentage of the violators across all the sports as compared to 2015 remained the same (at 2.3 percent) after the results. However, the number of violators reduced from 110 in 2015 (which comprised 4,734 players) to 71 in 2017. According to the results, nine samples were found to be suspicious and may require further investigation.

The recent NADA test results even stated that out of the 815 Tests conducted (including 84 blood samples), 502 were in-competition (IC) and 229 were Out of Competition (OOC).

Power Lifting had the second highest number of dope offenders comprising of 14 positive tests out of the 50 IC samples collected while Weightlifting had 11 dope offenders out of the 359 samples collected.

Surprisingly, with the highest percentage of dope offenders (50 %), Bodybuilding had 9 positive tests out of the 18 samples collected by NADA.
