CWG gold medalist Neeraj Chopra finishes sixth in Eugene Diamond League
Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra who bagged a gold at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games managed to finish sixth at the IAAF Diamond League in USA. Chopra registered his best throw of 80.81 in his second attempt to finish ahead of Ahmed Magour of Qatar who threw a best of 78.16.
Chopra has garnered quite a reputation for himself due to his exploits on the field since he secured his first medal in 2016 at the at the South Asian Games with a throw of 82.23 m, which equalled the Indian national record. Neeraj followed that win with a gold medal in the 2017 Asian Athletic Championships with a throw of 85.23 meters.
His most recent success came at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games where the 20-year old youngster did the nation proud by bagging India’s first gold medal in the event of Javelin throw at the CWG. Post that historic victory, Chopra broke the national record in May at the Doha Diamond League with a throw of 87.43 meters.
However, constant pressure and an overload of competitions seemed to have taken a toll on the young lad from Haryana as he could just manage to finish sixth at the recently concluded IAAF Diamond League being held in Eugene, USA. Chopra could just register a throw of 80.81 in his second attempt which ensured he finished ahead of Ahmed Magour of Qatar who threw a best of 78.16.
Chopra fouled his last three attempts to bring his campaign to a disappointing end in USA. German trio of Thomas Rohler (89.88), Johannes Vetter (89.34m) and Andreas Hofmann (86.45m) won gold, silver and bronze respectively at the event to dominate proceedings.
