The Para Athletes were praised and also rewarded for their best ever show at the recently concluded Para Asian Games held in Indonesia. The Para Asian Games are held after the conclusion of the Asian Games for those athletes who have disabilities of different extent in any part of their body.

A facilitation cum reward ceremony was held for the medal winners of the Para Asian Games in New Delhi. In attendance were also the Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Sports Secretary Rahul Bhatnagar and Sports India (earlier Sports Authority of India) Director General Neelam Kapur among others.

“You guys are true icons of the country. This journey was not easy because you guys have overcome many obstacles in life. Many might have given up but you guys didn’t. It proves your self-determination. Many people might have doubted your abilities but today you have proved them wrong,” Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore said, reported PTI.

The sports Minister also emphasised on the fact that the Government treats normal athletes and para athletes with same importance. The medallists were rewarded on par with their Asian Games counterparts as the Gold medal winners got 30 lakhs, the silver medal winners 20 lakhs and the bronze medal winners got 10 lakhs rupees respectively each. The Minister also urged the athletes to focus on the upcoming Para Olympics in Tokyo.

“The Sports Ministry and the government is fully with you guys. We have set up a Centre of Excellence in a new stadium at Gandhinagar exclusively for you guys,” Rathore added.

The Para athletes even managed to beat their Asian Games counterparts’ medal tally by three medals when they bagged 15 Gold, 24 silver and 33 bronze medals to finish at their best ever position of ninth at any Para Asian Games.
