Wyndham offers Anirban Lahiri last chance to make season-end playoffs, Diksha Dagar looking forward to British Open debut

Anirban Lahiri will be taking the field for the last time this season when he tees off at the Wyndham Championship on Thursday unless a strong campaign helps him qualify for the playoffs. Meanwhile, Diksha Dagar will be the only Indian competing in the British Open and is excited for the honour.

Anirban Lahiri will look to end a disappointing season on a strong note at the Wyndham Championship Greensboro which is set to commence on Thursday. The event will be the final one in the regular 2018-19 PGA season and will be followed by the FedExCup playoffs which is scheduled to start next week. However, compatriot and past winner Arjun Atwal won’t be able to participate in the tournament having lost his tour card.

Lahiri has not won a title for the last four years, having last ended as champion in the 2015 Indian Open. He is currently placed 178th in the ongoing season and will lose his PGA Tour card as things stand. He has only recorded three top-30 finishes over the past year, including a solitary t-10 which came at the Mayakoba Golf Classic last year. However, a finish of second or better will earn him a spot in the playoffs although the chances of such happening look bleak and has not got into the field this week.

Lahiri is also set to participate in the KornFerry final series of three events in order to retain his tour card. A top-25 finish in the three events will enable him to do so and Lahiri will be hopeful of the same expecting a weaker field after the recently-concluded The Open Championship and the WGC-FedEx St Jude Invitational.

In other news, Diksha Dagar will be the country’s sole representative at this year’s last major, the 2019 AIG Women’s British Open. The 18-year-old will only be playing her second major when she tees on Thursday, having made her debut at the Evian Championships recently where she failed to make the cut with rounds of 77-78.

“I think I played alright, but just did not score. Sometimes that happens in golf, but I enjoyed my maiden Major appearance,” said Dagar.

However, she will be looking to do better at the British Open.

“This is the major all of us love to follow, so to be able to play in that is indeed a honour. Winning the Women’s South African Open was a big step forward and it has got me here,” said Diksha.
