Kiren Rijiju has been appointed as India’s next Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports in the newly-elected government led by prime minister Narendra Modi. The 47-year-old Member of Parliament replaced former India shooter Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore in the ministry after taking oath on Thursday.

After serving as the Minister of State for Home Affairs in the first Narendra Modi government last time around, Arunachal Pradesh MP Rijiju has given the responsibility of the sports and youth affairs ministry in the new union government. The newly-appointed union ministers along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi took oath yesterday at the Rashtrapati Bhawan in New Delhi. Prior to Rijiju, 2004 Athens Olympic medalist Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore was the in-charge of the sports department in the union government.

Rijiju was elected from the Arunachal West Lok Sabha constituency in the recently-concluded Lok Sabha elections and was sworn in as a union minister on Thursday. He earlier served as the Minister of State for Home Affairs in the previous NDA government as well.

According to a report in Eastern Panaroma, Rijiu had participated in the National Games during his college days and was also named the best athlete in his school and college.

Former Indian shooter Rathore also won the Lok Sabha elections from the Jaipur Rural constituency for a second consecutive time but he was not included in the council of ministers who took oath yesterday.
