India has the capability to host the Olympics, claims Kiren Rijiju
Indian sports minister Kiren Rijiju has shown interest in hosting the 2032 Olympics, stating that the country has the capabilities to stage an event of such magnitude. The country has already hosted a few multi-sports events, but the budget to host the Olympics will be greater than any one of them.
In the past, India has hosted several multi-sports events in the past, including the 1951 Asian Games, 1982 Asian Games and the 2010 Commonwealth Games, but the dream of hosting an Olympics Games has still eluded the Asian country. But, Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju has shown interest in hosting the 2032 edition of the mega-event.
"The government has to give clearance as it has to be a solid commitment. It is not just Rs 1000-2000 crore. Olympics is of a massive scale. We are still discussing about hosting the Olympics and bidding for it is a huge task that needs so much preparation before we actually make any announcement,” said Kiren Rijiju.
“I cannot make any announcement, but we are exploring the possibilities as I think India has the capability to host the Olympics," added the official.
The budget for hosting the 2010 Commonwealth Games was Rs. 70, 608 crore, which is itself huge. But, hosting the Olympics will mean a greater amount has to be injected into the system, for which the clearance has to given from the central government.
