The Swimming Federation of India has announced on Tuesday that Sajan Prakash and Shivani Katariya will be participating at the Rio Olympics. India were awarded two 'Universality' places by Fédération internationale de natation (FINA) after the qualification window was closed on July 3.

22-year-old Sajan will compete in the men's 200m butterfly event, whereas Shivani, who is just 18, will take part in the women's 200m freestyle event.

“Sajan has been a consistent performer this season. That’s why he was selected when Pradeep, Wilson Cherian, the president (Digambar Kamat) and I met this morning.

“Sandeep’s performance in Hong Kong was not up to the mark while Virdhawal has not been able to fully devote himself to training owing to his job,” SFI secretary Kamlesh Nanavati told the Hindu.

“Sajan is in good shape,” national coach Pradeep was quoted as saying by The Hindu.

The two places were awarded on 'Universality quota' to India after none of the swimmers managed to rack up the qualification time.
