Punjab defeats Hyderabad to lift CTL title

Punjab Marshalls defeated Hyderabad Aces 22-21 in the finals to lift the Champions Tennis League (CTL) trophy on Sunday at the Lal Bahadur Stadium in Hyderabad. Marcos Baghdatis won the deciding men’s singles tie to guide Punjab after both teams were tied at 17-17.

In the CTL format, the final result is decided upon the basis of the aggregate score of the five-match tie. The five matches are in the category of legends (singles), mixed doubles, women's singles, men's doubles and men's singles. Each tie also consists of five sets.

In the legends tie, Greg Rusedski defeated Thomas Johansson 5-4 to give Punjab a winning start to the match.

In the women’s singles tie, Elina Svitolina defeated Martina Hingis 5-4 to extend Punjab’s lead to 10-8.

Hingis partnered Ivo Karlovic to smash Marcos Baghdatis and Elina Svitolina 5-2 in the mixed doubles to take Hyderabad into the lead.

However, Baghdatis and Saketh Myneni defeated Ivo Karlovic and Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan 5-4 to level the match at 17-17.

In the deciding men’s singles tie, Marcos Baghdatis and Ivo Karlovic were tied at 4-4 before Baghdatis broke the deadlock to clinch the final game to win the match 5-4 and clinch the title for Punjab Marshalls.

Martina Hingis was awarded the Robert Amritraj Award for the Most Valuable Player, while Saketh Myneni won the Margaret Amritraj award for the best Indian player for the second successive year.
