Punjab Marshalls continue unbeaten run in CTL

Punjab Marshalls made it three wins in three games as they beat Mumbai Tennis Masters 24-13 in the Champions Tennis League (CTL) 2015 at the CLTA Stadium in Chandigarh on Saturday. Elina Svitolina continued her impressive performance in the league with a win over US Open champion Flavia Pennetta.

In the CTL format, the final result is decided upon the basis of the aggregate score of the five-match tie. The five matches are in the category of legends (singles), mixed doubles, women's singles, men's doubles and men's singles. Each tie also consists of five sets.

In the legends’ tie, Greg Rusedski thrashed Richard Krajicek 5-3 to to give a brilliant start to Punjab Marshalls.

In the women’s singles tie, Elina Svitolina kicked off from where she left off yesterday to beat US Open champion Flavia Pennetta 5-2. With two wins from two ties, Punjab Marshalls went into the mixed doubles tie with a 10-5 lead.

Marcos Baghdatis and Elina Svitolina steam-rolled Santiago Giraldo and Flavia Pennetta in the mixed doubles game to win the tie 5-0.


With an unassailable 15-5 lead, Punjab Marshalls confirmed victory in their second home match with two ties remaining. Mumbai Masters’ Santiago Giraldo and Sriram Balaji produced a spirited performance in the Men’s doubles tie to win the game 5-4 against Marcos Baghdatis and Saketh Myneni.

In the final tie of the night, Marcos Baghdatis beat Santiago Giraldo 5-3 to register a 24-13 victory for the Punjab Marshalls.

Punjab Marshalls lead the North Zone of CTL with three wins from three games, while Mumbai Tennis Masters tasted defeat in all the three games.

The CTL now moves to Hyderabad with Hyderabad Aces taking on Nagpur Orangers in the match tomorrow.
