Hingis, Karlovic guides Hyderabad Aces to victory

Hyderabad Aces notched up a 25-19 victory against V Chennai Warriors in the Champions Tennis League (CTL) 2015 at the Sports Authority of Telangana State stadium in Hyderabad on Monday. Impressive performances from former world number one Martina Hingis and Ivo Karlovic was the highlight of the day as Hyderabad ended Chennai’s hopes of securing a place in CTL final.

In the CTL format, the final result is decided upon the basis of the aggregate score of the five-match tie. The five matches are in the category of legends (singles), mixed doubles, women's singles, men's doubles and men's singles. Each tie also consists of five sets.

In the legends’ tie, Thomas Johansson of Hyderabad defeated Rainer Schuettler of Chennai 5-3 to give the hosts a winning start to the match.

Former world number one Martina Hingis of Hyderabad and Chennai’s Heather Watson clashed against each other in the women’s singles tie. Hingis won the tie 5-2 to register a 10-5 lead for the Hyderabad Aces.

Hingis partnered Croatian Ivo Karlovic in the mixed doubles tie to defeat Heather Watson and Fernando Verdasco 5-4. Both pairs were level at four games each, before Hingis and Karlovic held their nerve to defeat Chennai.

Ivo Karlovic partnered Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan in the men’s doubles tie to play a close match against Fernando Verdasco and Vishnu Vardhan of V Chennai Warriors. The match went into a tie-breaker after both pairs level at 4-4. Karlovic and Nedunchezhiyan won the tie 5-4, by winning the nine point tie-breaker 5-3.

Hyderabad lead the match 20-13 at the end of men’s doubles tie, with only the men’s singles tie between Karlovic and Verdasco remaining. Verdasco won the tie 5-4 and Chennai used Super Point to take the match into overtime.

In the overtime, Verdasco won the first game to raise the hopes of Chennai, however, Karlovic held his nerve in next game to win the match for Hyderabad. With three defeats in three games, V Chennai Warriors is out of the race for a spot in CTL final.

CTL now moves to Raipur, where Raipur Rangers will take on Mumbai Tennis Masters in the match tomorrow. Raipur Rangers had defeated Mumbai Tennis Masters 23-14 in their last meeting at Mumbai.
