Mirza-Hingis make perfect start to WTA Finals campaign in Singapore
World No.1, Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis, cruised to a comfortable 6-4, 6-2 victory over the sixth seeded pairing of Raquel Kops-Jones and Abigail Spears, in their opening game of the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore on Monday.
The Indo-swiss pair made quick work of Kops-Jones and Spears as they took an early lead in both the sets on their way to a win. This was the first game of the Red group in this round-robin phase.
Mirza, who won this tournament last year partnering Cara Black, will face the seventh seeded all-Czech team of Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka tomorrow at 7 pm IST.
After yesterday's win, Mirza and Hingis stretched their unbeaten run to 18 matches, a streak which started with their US Open title winning campaign. The pair are now gunning for their ninth title of the season, in what has been an incredibly successful run since they joined forces back in March.
Hingis was delighted with their performance in the opening game and praised Sania Mirza's serve during the two sets. "I think we played pretty well; it was nice to get that break really early in both sets. Sania came out with some great serves when it was needed. We were able to hold on and finish off," the 35-year-old said.
Mirza, the number one ranked doubles player, maintained her unbeaten record in Singapore (4-0) and expressed her delight about playing in Singapore. “It's always great to come back to a tournament where you've done really well in the past. It's great to come back to Singapore. I always keep saying this, but it's as close to home for me as possible. It was great to get that first win, and just to warm-up- we haven't played together in a couple of weeks, so it was great to get that win today," Mirza told after the match.
