US Open champion Pennetta to play for Mumbai in Champions Tennis League
Reigning US Open champion Flavia Pennetta will turn out for Mumbai Masters in the second edition of the Champions Tennis League to be played across six Indian cities from November 23 to December 6.
The Italian world number seven has former Wimbledon champion Richard Krajicek as Legend teammate in the city-based franchise competition, the brainchild of former Indian tennis ace Vijay Amritraj.
New entrants Raipur and Nagpur join Mumbai, Hyderabad and Chandigarh to complete five of the six city-based franchises. “The sixth, which is a toss-up between Pune, Chennai and Bengaluru, will be confirmed within a week to 10 days,” Amritraj told a news conference after the players’ draft.
The winners bag Rs one crore, while the runners-up take home Rs 50 lakh.
Kevin Anderson of South Africa, who beat Briton Andy Murray in the US Open, and powerful Croat Ivo Karlovic will represent Raipur and Hyderabad respectively as leading professionals, along with Italian Andreas Seppi for Mumbai, Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis for Punjab and Frenchman Feliciano Lopez for Nagpur and Spaniard Fernando Verdasco (for the unnamed team).
Swiss former world number one Martina Hingis (Hyderabad), Serb Jelena Jankovic (Nagpur), France’s Alize Cornet (Raipur), Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina (Punjab) and Briton Heather Watson (unnamed team) are the other top women professionals in the competition.
