Czech tennis star Petra Kvitova, who won the Wimbledon singles title twice in 2011 and 2014, was attacked today by a knife-wielding intruder at her home in Prostejov. Her spokesman has confirmed that the 26-year-old has suffered non-life threatening injuries, and is being treated by doctors.

“Today before half past eight in the morning, a 26-year-old woman was attacked near Prostejov. The unidentified perpetrator broke into the apartment using a ruse,” Karel Tejkal, Kvitova’s spokesman told the Guardian.

"I am shaken. The injury is severe and I will need to see specialists," Kvitova said, reported BBC.

The World no.11's spokesman later labeled the event as a 'random crime'. He said, "It was a random crime, nobody was going to attack or rob her as Petra Kvitova."

The tennis star has now released a statement where she has said that the injury is 'severe' and that she is 'fortunate to be alive'.

Thank you for all your heartwarming messages.

As you may have already heard, today I was attacked in my apartment by an individual with a knife. In my attempt to defend myself, I was badly injured on my left hand.

"I am shaken, but fortunate to be alive. The injury is severe and I will need to see specialists, but if you know anything about me I am strong and I will fight this. Thank you all again for your love and support and now I would appreciate some privacy while I focus on my recovery," read Kvitova's official statement.

Kvitova has suffered injuries to her left hand from the attack and is currently undergoing treatment. Kvitova, who had won the bronze medal at the Rio Olympics earlier this year, had recently withdrawn from the Czech Hopman Cup team due to a foot injury. She had earlier tweeted on Tuesday, “I am so disappointed that I cannot play at the @hopmancup. The results of an MRI have confirmed that my foot is healing, but not as quickly as we would have liked. The Hopman Cup is a fantastic event and I’m sorry I won’t be able to represent my country there.”
