Tennis star Petra Kvitova, who was attacked by a knife-wielding intruder at her home in Prostejov on Tuesday (Dec 20), will be out of action for at least 6 months after undergoing a surgery on her left hand. The 2-time Wimbledon champion faces a slow rehabilitation process after 14 days of bed rest.

The 26-year-old Kvitova suffered severe injuries from the attack on her playing hand. "The best-case scenario is that Petra will be able to return to the tennis court after six months,” her publicist Katie Spellman told AFP news agency. She went to add that Kvitova “is ready to do everything she can to get back to competing at the highest level."

Radek Kebrle, Kvitova’s surgeon, told the BBC that it would take at least three months for the player to be able to grip a racquet again.

"It`s unclear if or when Kvitova will be back on the court, and the start of 2017 won`t be the same without her unique power and competitive spirit," the WTA said on its website.

World No 11 Kvitova has won 19 singles titles in her career, including two this year.
