Three-time Grand Slam winner Stan Wawrinka will open the 2017 season in Brisbane and not at the Chennai Open as has been his custom for the past eight years. The 31-year-old Swiss world No 3 has won the Indian event on four occasions.

Wawrinka won the season-opener in Chennai the last three years that saw him go on to bag the Australian Open in 2014, the French Open in 2015 and the US Open in September this year, and has previously described the Indian event as his “good luck charm.”

“I’ve heard such great things about the event and the beautiful city of Brisbane, and it feels like the right time to change-up the start of my season,” he told the Courier Mail newspaper.

Multiple men’s Grand Slam winner Rafa Nadal also features in the field in Brisbane to be played between Jan 1 and 8 in the lead-up to the Australian Open.
