Davis Cup | Spain thrash India 5-0 to progress to World Group stage
Extending their 3-0 lead from the last night, Marc Lopez and David Ferrer won their matches, against Sumit Nagal and Ramkumar Ramanathan respectively, to win this World Group playoff tie 5-0 in New Delhi on Sunday. Nagal threw away a winnable match by losing 6 games in the row in the third set.
Game 4: Marc Lopez beats Sumit Nagal 6-3, 1-6, 6-3
With Spain taking an unassailable 3-0 lead last night, the remaining two matches of the tie were reduced to the best of three format. Marc Lopez took on 19-year-old Sumit Nagal in the singles match. The Spaniard broke the Indian teenager in his first service game and raced to a 4-1 lead, before winning the first set 6-3.
In the second set, Nagal broke Lopez for the first time in the match as he showed a lot of fight on the court. Nagal consolidated his lead before winning the set 6-1. The teenager showed no nerves about playing such a veteran. The youngster broke Lopez once again, this time twice in a row in the opening two service games of the Spaniard, to race to a 3-0 lead. However, Nagal inexplicably lost the plot and went on to lose six games in a row from that point as Lopez sealed the match with a 6-3 win.
Game 5: David Ferrer beats Ramkumar Ramanathan 6-2, 6-2
In the final game of the tie, Ramkumar Ramanathan took on David Ferrer, and the Indian got off to a poor start. Ferrer broke him in the second game of the first set, and then comfortably won the first set 6-2. The second set followed the same script as the Spaniard cruised to a 6-2 win once again.
