Roger Federer has crossed past Serena Williams for winning the most matches in Grand Slams by defeating Mischa Zverev in the third round of Wimbledon on Saturday. The Swiss legend surpassed the American’s 316 Grand Slam singles match wins for an all-time record 317 wins.

18-time Grand Slam champion Federer now has 317 wins in Grand Slam matches and closely followed by Williams, who is yet to play a Grand Slam match after her Australian Open triumph in January due to pregnancy. Two former World No.1s, Martina Navratilova (306) and Chris Evert (299) are at the third and fourth position respectively of Grand Slam match wins.

While Williams can be a threat for the Swiss to break his record in near future, no male tennis stars are near to Federer in the most Grand Slam wins record, with Novak Djokovic in the second position with 236 wins- 81 less than of Federer's. Jimmy Connors’ 233, Andre Agassi’s 225, Ivan Lendl’s 222 and Rafael Nadal’s 217 are next on the list.

In September last year, during the US Open, Williams had beaten Federer’s record of most Grand Slam matches win with her 308th win in the Open era. When asked last year who she thinks would end up with the most wins between the two, the 23-time Grand Slam winner had replied, “I don’t know. Hopefully, we’ll both keep going. I know I plan on it. I know he does. So we’ll see.”

Federer will now face Grigor Dimitrov in the fourth round of Wimbledon on Monday in a bid to secure a quarter-final berth.
