Wimbledon 2017 | Garbine Muguruza overcomes Venus Williams to clinch maiden title
Garbine Muguruza defeated five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams in straight sets of 7-5, 6-0 to bag her maiden Wimbledon title yesterday. Meanwhile, Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo won the men's doubles title and Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina bagged the women's doubles title.
Venus Williams was the favourite to bag her sixth Wimbledon title and become the oldest player to win the Grand Slam in the professional era at the start of the women's singles final yesterday. However, Garbine Muguruza had other plans as the Spaniard romped past her American opponent becoming the first Spanish woman to win the title in 23 years after Conchita Martínez in 1994.
Williams started strongly, capitalising on her serves and winning the first game of the first set. Muguruza clawed back into the game winning the second game and the see-saw battle began as each of the finalists went on to win the games on their respective serves, tying the first set on 5-5. However, Muguruza won the 11th game of the set and went on to seal the set in her favour after a brief resistance from Williams who saved two break points before seeming to simply run out of energy.
The first game of the second set saw a fierce battle between the finalists which was eventually won by Muguruza who now had an advantage of a set and a game. From then on, Williams never recovered as her 23-year old opponent bagged back to back break points before a bizzare match point that called for hawk eye to come into play, and Muguruza added the Wimbledon title to her name after her French Open victory in 2016. The 23-year old had to suffer a defeat at the hands of the other Williams' sister Serena two years ago at the All England Club but had her revenge on Venus.
"I grew up watching play, so it’s incredible to play the final [against Venus]. [The nerves] are inside, of course I was nervous. It was very tough [the first set], we both had chances. Two years ago I lost to Serena in the final and she told me one day I’d win," Muguruza said before lifting the title.
On the other hand, the Polish-Brazillian duo of Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo outlasted the Austrian-Croatian combination of Oliver Marach and Mate Pavic 5-7, 7-5, 7-6, 3-6, 13-11 to win the men's doubles category in a 4 hours 39 minutes long marathon contest.
In the women's doubles category the all-Russian pair of Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina outclassed the Romanian-Taiwanese combination of Chan Hao-Ching and Monica Niculescu 6-0, 6-0 to take home their third Grand Slam title - their first at Wimbledon, after winning a gold medal at the Rio Olympics.
