French Open Roundup | Murray beats Del Potro; Halep enters last-16

World number one Andy Murray defeated Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina in the French Open on Saturday. Murray registered a 7-6 (10/8), 7-5, 6-0 win over his long-time rival. Meanwhile, Stan Wawrinka also entered the last-16. In women’s category, Simona Halep secured her place in the fourth round.

Top-seeded Andy Murray reached the French Open fourth round after thrashing Argentina’s Juan Martin Del Potro 7-6 (10/8), 7-5, 6-0. Murray will next face American John Isner or Russia's Karen Khachanov. After struggling for consistency in his initial matches, Murray finally found his rhythm in a rain-affected match.

Speaking of his victory Murray said, "Whoever won that first set would have the momentum as it would have been very difficult to come back in these heavy, slow conditions," as reported by Firstpost.

"He was playing much better than me in the first set. He had chances in the first set, he double-faulted on set point."

The match turned late in the first set when Del Potro failed to convert any of four set points and Murray eventually took the tie-break with his third set point.

In another clash, third-seeded Swiss player Stan Wawrinka reached to the fourth-round after beating Italy’s Fabio Fognini 7-6 (7/2), 6-0, 6-2.

Former US Open champion Marin Cilic also entered to the next round without losing a set, as he registered an easy 6-1, 6-3, 6-3 win over Spaniard Feliciano Lopez.

Meanwhile, British number two Kyle Edumnd’s run came to an end with a loss to Kevin Anderson in five sets game. Anderson twice recovered from a set down to advance 6-7 (6/8), 7-6 (7/4), 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 in just under four hours. Anderson will now meet Marin Cilic in the fourth round.

In the women’s section, Romanian third-seeded player and 2014 runner-up Simona Halep sealed her place in the fourth round with a 6-0, 7-5 win over Russia's Daria Kasatkina. 25-year-old Halep will next face Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro for a place in the quarter-finals.

Home favorite Alizé Cornet reached the last 16 with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Polish ninth seed Agnieszka Radwanska who lost all her seven service games. Cornet is set to take on compatriot Caroline Garcia in the round of 16 tomorrow. 28th seeded player Garcia, made the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time with a 6-4, 4-6, 9-7 win over Taiwan's world number 109 Hsieh Su-Wei.

Nadal is the only male player in tennis history to win one Grand Slam and Masters 1000 title for ten consecutive years from 2005–2014.
