World No. 302 Tommy Haas dominates Roger Federer on grasscourt
Roger Federer's comeback on the tennis court was cut short by Tommy Haas, who defeated the Swiss 2-6, 7-6(8-10), 6-4 in the second round of the Stuttgart Open. Earlier, the 18-time Grand Slam winner had missed the entire clay court season in a bid to prepare for Wimbledon.
Roger Federer's comeback was marred by second-round loss to Tommy Haas, a veteran grasscourt player who played some splendid tennis to show Federer the exit door in the ATP 250 World Tour tournament.
The Swiss started the match, which was anticipated to be an easy encounter, on the offensive winning the first set 6-2. However, in the second set, Federer looked a bit rusty and squandered a match point forcing the set into a tiebreaker where he again had a chance to win the match. However, 39-year old Haas did not let that happen and forced the game into the third set.
In the 3rd set, Haas, the former World No. 2 and currently in the 302nd position, broke Federer early and maintained his advantage to pull off an upset over the World No. Five 6-4 to set up a quarterfinal clash with compatriot Mischa Zverev.
Roger Federer missed the whole clay court season in order to rest his body and to prepare for the upcoming Wimbledon which is scheduled to take place on July 3rd. Federer won the Australian Open, Miami Open and Indian Wells defeating arch-rival Rafael Nadal in the first two respectively. The Stuttgart Open and Queen's Club Championship are grasscourt events which are seen as warm-up events building up to the Grand Slam Wimbledon event. Federer's early loss would definitely hamper his preparations for his favorite Grand Slam event, where he has been crowned champion seven times.
