Earlier, McEnroe that stated in an interview that Serena Williams would be ranked 700 if she played on the men's circuit. Williams, who didn't take take the comments kindly asked him to make factually based statements to which McEnroe has proposed a "Men vs Women" tennis game to prove his statement.

58-year-old McEnroe, in an interview with NPR's Lulu Garcia-Navarro, had refused to call Williams the greatest tennis player indicating that she is the best "female" player and that her performance on the men's circuit would be an "entirely different story."

In response to this statement, Williams wrote on Twitter, "Dear John, I adore and respect you but please please keep me out of your statements that are not factually based".

In another tweet she said, "I've never played anyone ranked "there" nor do I have time. Respect me and my privacy as I'm trying to have a baby. Good day sir".

Yesterday in response to Williams, McEnroe offered an idea to prove his statement.

"I felt the need, however unfortunately, to defend myself and say what I really felt, which is about what I think she would be (in the men's rankings)," McEnroe told American TV show CBS's This Morning on Tuesday. "I've got a solution. Solve the problem, and I'm sure the men would be all for this - the men and women play together. And then we don't have to guess," he said as quoted by TOI.

However, Williams, who is the most successful female player, will not be able to take up McEnroe on his challenge anytime soon as she had confirmed her pregnancy in April and only expects to be back on court in early January 2018.
