WATCH: Grigor Dimitrov shows impeccable hand skills against Dominic Thiem at the O2 Arena
Grigor Dimitrov has marked his first appearance in London with a hard-fought 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 win over fellow debutant Dominic Theim at the ATP World Tour Finals on Monday. During the clash, Dimitrov showed his sensational touch at the net with a perfect backhand drop volley against the Austrian ace.
Dimitrov opened his charge in London with a determined display as he won 6-3 5-7 7-5 against Dominic Theim, who is ranked two places higher in the rankings, at The O2 on Monday.
During the end to end game, Dimitrov drew a loud cheer from the crowd when he ended a breathtaking rally exhibiting his incredible athleticism and volleying skills.
Thiem had hit a strong forehand and approached the net, which was returned by Dimitrov with a backhand down the line. The Austrian then unleashed a forehand volley, which was almost beyond Dimitrov's reach. However, the Bulgarian was lightning fast in his approach and got a forehand to it at full stretch moving out of the court, which then left for an easy backhand winner for Thiem.
And as expected, Thiem returned the ball with little to no power safe in the knowledge that he had won the point, only for Dimitrov to come back to the midcourt and finish it off with an exceptionally soft backhand drop shot. Thiem was too far out and made a futile attempt, before giving up.
