WATCH | Rafael Nadal provides priceless expression after David Goffin winner
In his sixteen year career, there are few occasions where Rafael Nadal was left surprised by something that happened on a tennis court. David Goffin, however, can strike out the same from his list, as he left the Spaniard stunned with a brilliant down the line winner at the ATP Tour Finals.
After losing the first set to Goffin in his Tour Finals opener, Nadal was on serve with the scoreboard reflecting the Belgian leading by 4-3. Nadal’s service down the T was returned to the Ad Court sideline by Goffin. The Spaniard reacted quickly with a cross-court forehand that the Belgian could only send back to the middle of the court.
Nadal quickly took control of the point with a backhand and a forehand shot to Goffin’s backhand. The latter sliced the second shot to the centre of the court and Nadal was quick to approach the net and placed his forehand shot near the right-hand sideline. Goffin, however, made up the ground in no time and on getting to the ball wrapped his racquet around the ball and managed to curl the ball from outside the sideline to win the point.
Even though it was definitely the shot of the match, what was even better was the expression of utter disbelief on Nadal’s face following the shot. While Nadal ended up winning the second set, he was eventually ousted in the decider. Following the defeat, Nadal announced his decision to pull out of the tournament due to his recurring knee injury.
