Tennis star Roger Federer, who lost in the US Open quarterfinals last year, has been scheduled to face Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka in the 1st round and could meet Novak Djokovic in this year’s quarter-finals. On the other hand, defending champion Rafael Nadal has been scheduled to play David Ferrer.

According to the US Open draw, No. 1 ranked Nadal will open against Ferrer in an all-Spanish rematch of their 2013 French Open final. On the other hand, considering an early exit in the last edition, Federer might face No. 6 seed Djokovic, the Wimbledon champion who beat him two weeks ago and is considered a tournament favourite. However, Nadal was not sure about it (tournament favourite) and wanted to start off the tournament on a  positive note.

“Of course Novak and Roger are doing pretty well and especially they like the hard courts. I don’t want to predict the future, let’s see who wins,” Nadal said during the draw ceremony.

No. 4 seed Alexander Zverev and seventh-seeded Marin Cilic, the 2014 US Open champion, will also be in Federer’s half of the draw along with No. 30 seed Nick Kyrgios, the Australian whom Federer could meet in the third round. Stan Wawrinka, the 2016 US Open champion, who missed last year’s tournament because of an injury and was given a wild card into this year’s field, will face No. 8 seed Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria in the first round.

Meanwhile, Nadal’s half of the draw has No. 3 seed and 2009 US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro, who could face another former US Open champion Andy Murray in the third round and fifth seed Kevin Anderson, the Wimbledon and US Open runner-up.

In the women’s category, Serena and Venus Williams could be headed towards their earliest Grand Slam meeting in 20 years, facing a potential third-round clash. If the sisters do play each other, the winner might face No. 1 ranked Simona Halep in the fourth round. However, Venus, who won five of her seven grand slam trophies in New York, will face Svetlana Kuznetsova in the first-round while her (Venus’) sister will play against the 60th-ranked Magda Linette of Poland.

Women’s No. 2 seed Caroline Wozniacki will face 2011 US Open champion Sam Stosur in the first round. On the other hand, Defending champion Sloane Stephens could face former No. 1 Victoria Azarenka in the third round.
