Davis Cup | India-Pakistan tie scheduled to be played in Lahore postponed to November
After weeks of dispute and indecision, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) has finally decided to postpone the India-Pakistan Davis Cup tie to November. The All India Tennis Association (AITA) had earlier requested the ITF for a change of the venue citing security reasons in Pakistan.
The International Tennis Federation (ITF) on Thursday announced that the India-Pakistan Davis Cup tie which was scheduled to be played on September 14th and 15th in Lahore has now been postponed to November.
After a fallout in diplomatic ties between the two countries, the AITA had requested the ITF for the tie to be shifted to a different location. After weeks of dispute, disagreement and indecision, the ITF have now finally decided on postponing the tie for the time being, with the exact dates to be confirmed on September 9.
"Following an in-depth security review of the current situation in Pakistan by independent expert security advisors, the Davis Cup Committee has taken the decision to postpone the Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group I tie between Pakistan and India in Islamabad. The committee concluded that this is an exceptional circumstance while the first priority of the ITF is the safety and security of athletes, officials and spectators.
"The tie has been rescheduled for November, with the exact dates to be confirmed by the committee no later than September 9. The ITF will continue to monitor the situation in Pakistan and the Davis Cup Committee will re-convene to re-examine the security situation in advance of the tie," ITF said in a release.
According to Davis Cup rules, a tie can be moved out only under "exceptional circumstances". Moreover, a forfeit would also mean that the Indian team will be automatically relegated to the Asia/Oceania Group II.
