Playing in the main draw of the Australian Open, India’s Prajnesh Gunneswaran lost to Frances Tiafoe 6-7, 3-6, 3-6 to be knocked out of the prestigious tournament. With the exit of Gunneswaran from the opening round match, India’s challenge in the singles has also come to an end in the event.

Gunneswaran put up a good fight against the American from the beginning of the match but was not able to convert a few chances on offer. The highest ranked Indian tennis player lost the intensely fought first set which did not produce a single break point for both the players. The world no. 39 Tiafoe did well towards the end of the first set to close things down at the net.

Starting the second set on a higher note, the 29-year-old Indian took an early break but the error count kept on rising for him and he was broken once again in the sixth game of the set. With Gunneswaran committing crucial errors, Tiafoe won the second one in 30 minutes.

After losing the breakpoint first in the third set, the Indian came back well to make it 2-2 at one point in time. But, he was broken after that with Tiafoe converting the second match point opportunity with a running forehand shot.

Indian duo of Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan will play in the doubles category later in the tournament against the Spanish pair of Pablo Carreño Busta and Guillermo García-López on Wednesday.
