Prajnesh Gunneswaran has now reached a men’s singles ranking of 84 after starting his year with a rank of 243. This is owing to his phenomenal performance in the Indian Wells Masters where he even managed to defeat world number 18 Nikoloz Basilashvili which is his career’s biggest victory.

The Asian Games bronze medallist defeated French player Benoit Paire in straight sets to make an entry into the second round of the Indian Wells. He won his second round as well after he edged past Nikoloz Basilashvili in a hard-fought match lasting for three sets. In what was his first ever third round entry into an ATP 1000 Tournament, he faced Croatian Ivo Karlovic to end up on the losing side with the scores reading 3-6, 6-7(4). However, he gained 61 points in the process, which helped him improve his ATP rankings which was 97 before the tournament.

The next Indian to follow him in the rankings is 24-year-old Ramkumar Ramanathan at 139. Both of them have qualified for the main draw of the Miami Masters, where Gunneswaran has already won his first match against Spaniard A. Menéndez-Maceiras.

However, 26-year-old Yuki Bhambri has slipped to 207 after injuring his knee. Bhambri has had frequent run-ins with injuries, the most notable of them being his tennis elbow injury in 2016, which have forced him out of the action time and again. Bhambri is confident of returning back to the sport as early as May, reported PTI.

Post their exceptional performance in the BNP Paribas Open, also known as India Wells, Indian stars Gunneswaran and Ramanathan are expected to continue their good run in the Miami Open at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida which will continue till March 31.
