After winning the bronze medal in Olympics, Sakshi Malik is set to get richer by more than Rs. 3 crore after the Haryana government and Indian railways announced cash prizes of Rs. 2.5 crore and Rs. 60 lakhs respectively. She will also be promoted from the post of Senior Clerk to a gazetted officer

Sakshi Malik ended India’s medal-less run at the Rio Olympics yesterday after defeating Kyrgyzstan's Aisuluu Tynybekova in the bronze medal match in the women’s 58 kg freestyle category. With Sakshi belonging to Rohtak, Haryana, the state government announced a cash award of Rs. 2.5 crore for the wrestler, following her medal win on Thursday morning.

"We could not be prouder on the day of Raksha bandhan festival that our daughter Sakshi Malik has brought laurels to the state of Haryana and also to the nation by winning the bronze in the women's wrestling championship in the 58 kg category in the Rio Olympics. The Haryana Government will felicitate Sakshi Malik by giving her the well-deserved award of 2.5 crores and a government job as per our sports policy of 2015," said Haryana's Finance Minister Captain Abhimanyu Singh, reported PTI.

Sakshi Malik’s current employer, Indian Railways, have also announced Rs.60 lakh as cash award for the wrestler. Railways Sports Promotion Board secretary Rekha Yadav told PTI that the Board will reward Sakshi once she returns from Rio.

"It was the proactive approach of president Railways Sports Promotion Board (RSPB) Pradeep Kumar, who was instrumental in raising women's wrestling team and positive approach of the Ministry of Railways, who declared the awards not after Olympics as they usually do but prior so that there is an added motivation," the secretary of RSPB told.

Prior to the start of the Rio Games, the Railways Ministry had announced cash awards of Rs 1 crore, Rs 75 lakh, and Rs 50 lakh for athletes winning medals along with an added Rs. 10 lakh for qualifying.

Despite an injury preventing Vinesh Phogat from winning another medal, Yadav praised her efforts and added that Sakshi Malik will be promoted to the rank of a gazetted officer.

"The Indian Railways is proud of both its wrestlers Sakshi Malik and Vinesh Phogat. Sakshi is currently a senior clerk with Northern Railways. She will be promoted to the rank of a gazetted officer," Rekha Yadav added.
