PV SIndhu and Kidambi Srikanth started their campaign on a winning note as they registered straight-game wins over Japan’s Aya Ohori and Denmark’s Jan Jorgensen respectively. B Sai Praneeth was however humbled by Tzu Wei Wang and so were doubles pair of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy.

PV Sindhu started off her Malaysia Open campaign with straight games win of 26-24, 21-15 over Aya Ohori of Japan. The Japanese, who is ranked 14th in the World, started the first game well as she matched Sindhu shot for shot and even went into the break leading by a point. After the interval, it was pretty much the same as no player was able to establish a lead of more than two points. This resulted in Ohori earning herself the first game point of the day but Sindhu was quick to deny her.

Sindhu then squandered three game points of her own before defending one to bring the score up to 24-24. It was eventually the Indian who came out on top winning the next two points to seal the first game 26-24. The second game was very similar to the first one as both Sindhu and Okori refused to give an inch with the scoreboard showing the score tied at 14-14. However, that is when the Indian decided to shift gears and took seven out of the next eight points to seal the second game by a score of 21-15.

In the men’s single encounter between Kidambi Srikanth and Jan Jorgensen, the Indian, for a change, started off a match well by taking the first five-point of the game. However, the Dane pulled it back by making it a one-point game at 4-5 before leveling the scores at 7-7. But Srikanth took six out of the next seven points to open up a sizable lead at 13-8. Jorgensen, though, was in no mood to go away that easily and fought back to tie the game at 13-all. The duo then split the next 10 points equally before the Indian took control and the game 21-18 with three straight points. The second game turned into more of a display of Srikanth’s superior skills as after leveling at 5-5, he conceded just four more to seal the second game 21-9. The fourth seed of the event will play Tzu Wei Wang in Round 2 tomorrow.

But that was all the good news that Indian fans received today. 2017 Singapore Open winner Sai Praneeth was eliminated from the Malaysia Open in just 32 minutes as Tzu Wei Wang secured a 21-12, 21-7 victory. The Men’s Doubles’ pair of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy were ousted by the Japanese duo Takuto Inque and Yuki Kaneko in straight games of 21-16, 21-15.
