Ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a street in Berkeley Heights, New Jersey, has been renamed Leo Messi Way to honour Lionel Messi. The road lies near a popular Argentine supporters’ cafe.

Since joining Inter Miami CF in 2023, Messi has boosted football’s popularity in the United States with record crowds and growing MLS attention.

In the build up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, football legend Lionel Messi has received a special honour in the United States as a street in New Jersey has been named after him. A section of Sherman Avenue in Berkeley Heights, a small suburb in Union County with a population of more than 13,000 people, has officially been renamed “Leo Messi Way”.

The decision was taken by the BH FIFA World Cup 26 Task Force, a local group formed to increase excitement and community participation ahead of the World Cup, which will be hosted by the USA, Mexico, and Canada. The street is located next to Patria Station Cafe, a popular meeting place for Argentine football fans founded by dancer Carolina Zokalski. Messi’s influence in North American football has grown massively since joining Inter Miami in 2023.

His arrival helped Major League Soccer attract huge crowds and increased global attention toward football in the USA. The 8 time Ballon d’Or winner also guided Argentina national football team to the 2022 FIFA World Cup title in Qatar. Argentina will begin their 2026 World Cup campaign against Algeria in Kansas City on June 16.
