BWF SaarLorLux Open | Subhankar Dey enters final after beating Ren Pengbo in tough encounter
Subhankar Dey has been on a roll at the SaarLorLux Open in Germany and has got the better of China’s Ren Pengbo 21-18, 11-21, 24-22 to enter the finals of the tournament. In the final, the Bengal boy will lock horns with England’s Rajiv Ouseph, who beat Toma Junior Popov in the other semifinal.
Although the eventual scoreline suggests otherwise, the game was actually poised in Dey’s favour very early in the first game. Dey secured six consecutive points at 3-2 and entered the mid-game interval with a lead of 11-7. He didn’t lose the momentum in the second game and went on to establish a 15-9 lead, but that was when Pengbo decided to make a comeback in the game. The Chinese narrowed the gap to 15-12, but Dey was too dominant then and won it 21-18.
Once the second game reached 4-all, the Chinese shuttler made a mockery of the Indian and won seven consecutive points to enter the mid-game interval at 11-4. After the break, the story didn’t change as he kept on winning points for fun to take a 19-6 lead and the 25-year-old Indian eventually lost the game 21-11.
Dey, however, pulled up his socks and took a 7-3 lead and had the lead till mid-game interval. Pengbo staged a small comeback once again and levelled back on 12-12. After that it was a fine exhibition of skills and temperament as both shuttlers gave their all to secure a berth in the final. After leading at 20-18, Dey saved two match points and won the match 21-18, 11-21, 24-22.
Today, Dey will go up against former European champion Rajiv Ouseph who got the better of Toma Junior Popov of France by a margin of 21-8, 19-21, 21-19 in the other semifinal.
