BWF US Open | Sourabh Verma loses in semis to Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk
India’s sole contender in the BWF US Open bowed out on Saturday, after he lost to Thailand’s Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk in the semi-finals in straight games. Previously, India had seen the likes of Lakshya Sen, Parupalli Kashyap, and HS Prannoy getting ousted throughout the course of the tournament.
After stunning Prannoy in the last match that comprised of two gruelling games which lasted almost an hour, Verma was a huge favourite to overcome his Thai opponent and reach the summit clash. But what happened on Saturday was an anticlimax of sorts, as the Indian was seen getting totally outplayed in the first game.
The first game saw the Indian coming the closest at 2-1, very early in the game following which Tanongsak never really had Verma competing. With the score at 6-3, the Thai shuttler opened up a massive 10-point lead at 13-3, which was impossible to recover. Verma could never even reduce the massive deficit as he ended the first game 9-21.
The second game saw the Indian performing in a manner expected of him but despite staying toe-to-toe with his opponent this time, the momentum that Tanongsak carried from the first game was sufficient for him to take home the match. The match ended in 39 minutes.
