India gets tough draw in Sudirman Cup 2019

The Indian badminton team has been placed in Group D alongside China and Malaysia in the upcoming Sudirman Cup badminton championship to be held from May 19 to 26 in Nanning, China. India has never made it to the top four of the team tournament and had lost to China in the quarter-finals twice. 

India will not find it easy in the Sudirman Cup mixed tea badminton championship which will begin from May 19 in China as they have been placed in the same group with two tough opponents – China and Malaysia. India is in subgroup D of Group 1 which has four subgroups in total. The top two teams of each subgroup in Group 1 will make it to the top eight of the competition.

India has never played in the semi-finals of the team tournament and had qualified twice for the quarters. Earlier, India had lost to China in the top eight in 2011 and 2017 in the tournament. Japan along with Thailand and Russia have been placed in Group 1A while Indonesia, Denmark and Thailand are in 1B. Defending champions Korea will be taking on Chinese Taipei and Hong Kong in Group 1C.

The teams from Groups 2, 3 and 4 will fight for overall rankings during the team championship. The draw was conducted for 31 teams and they were divided into four different groups. The prestigious mixed team event in China features all the five formats in each tie.

Group A: Japan, Thailand, Russia

Group B: Indonesia, Denmark, England

Group C: Chinese Taipei, Korea, Hong Kong

Group D: China, India, Malaysia

Group 2

Group A: Netherlands, France, USA, Vietnam

Group B: Germany, Canada, Singapore, Israel

Group 3

Group A: Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Nepal

Group B: Switzerland, Sri Lanka, Slovakia, Lithuania

Group 4

Macau, Greenland, Kazakhstan.
