Five-time World champion MC Mary Kom will not be part of the Indian Olympic contingent at Rio, but she raised her voice for the athletes in Rajya Sabha yesterday by calling attention to the facilities provided. Mary Kom expressed concern about the training and diets provided to the players.

The 2012 Olympic bronze medallist was nominated to the Rajya Sabha back in April this year, and she made her first intervention in the Upper House during the Question Hour yesterday to talk about the problems of the athletes. The 33-year-old from Manipur stressed on the need to provide specific training and diets to players. Mary Kom talked about instances where the food arrived minutes before the players were about to go for an important match.

The boxer also wished the best to the Indian Olympic contingent and hoped that they would bring back laurels for the country. The other members in the Rajya Sabha lauded Mary Kom’s intervention by thumping their desks.

Answering Mary Kom’s concerns, Sports Minister Vijay Goel said that he would look into the specific complaints. The Minister also added that the government has already started preparations for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and has spent around Rs. 30 lakh to Rs. One crore for the training of each player for Rio.
