AIBA Olympic Qualifiers | Devendro Singh fails to qualify for Rio
Commonwealth Games silver-medallist L Devendro Singh’s hopes of making it to Rio Olympics ended on Friday after he lost his semi-final bout to Samuel Heredia 0-3 at Baku, Azerbaijan. Earlier, Manoj Kumar and Vikas Krishan had qualified for the Olympics from the AIBA World Qualifying Tournament.
After the 24-year-old emphatically defeated Argentina's Leandro Blanc 3-0 in the pre-quarters and South Africa's Bandla Sibusiso 3-0 in the quarter-finals, he seemed the favourite to win his bout in the 49 kg category semi-final. He needed to win against the Spaniard Samuel Carmona Heredia to confirm a birth in the 2016 Olympic games, but he failed to do so. Although he failed in the semi-final, Devendro Singh claimed a bronze medal after making it to the last four.
Earlier, Manoj Kumar in the 64kg light welter category and Vikas Krishan in the 75 kg middleweight category had qualified for the Olympics from the AIBA World Qualifying Tournament in Baku, Azerbaijan. India now has three representatives in boxing at the Rio Olympics. Shiva Thapa, of bantamweight category, had qualified for the Olympics back in April through the Asian Qualifiers.
