Tata Steel Chess | Viswanathan Anand slips to third position after losing to Magnus Carlsen

Viswanathan Anand slipped to third position at the Tata Steel Chess event after being defeated by World Champion Magnus Carlsen in the 10th round of the tournament. While Anand has slipped to joint third position with six points, Carlsen has taken a sole lead in the tournament with seven points.

While both Viswanathan Anand and Magnus Carlsen went into the tenth round of the Tata Steel Chess event with joint lead, Carlsen was the sole leader of the pack at the conclusion of the round. He managed to defeat the Indian in 76 moves thus taking half-a-point lead over Anish Giri, who is sole second placed player with 6.5 points against his name.

Giri managed to stay close to the leader by defeating Vladimir Fedoseev thus staying in contention. At the third position, Anand is not alone and is accompanied by Ian Nepomniachtchi and Liren Ding, who have six points each. 

In other games earlier, Vidit Gujarati defeated former world champion Vladimir Kramnik in 29 moves in their Nimzo-Indian game to keep alive his hopes of finishing in the top half. While in the challengers section, R. Praggnanandhaa (4) lost to leader Maksim Chigaev in 51 moves.
