Indian men defeat Egypt at World Team Chess Championship; Indian women defeat Armenia

Indian GM B Adhiban defeated higher-placed opponent Amin Bassem on the top board as Indian men registered a 3.5-0.5 victory over Egypt in the third round of World Team Chess Championship. Meanwhile, the Indian women they defeated Armenia 2.5-1.5 to stay in the hunt for a medal in the tournament.

The Indian chess contingent that is currently in Kazakhstan had a positive end to the third round of the World Team Chess Championship which is being held in the country. The men’s team jumped to joint second spot in rankings on five points out of a possible six after they registered a morale-boosting 3.5 - 0.5 win against Egypt in round three. 

National Champion Aravindh Chithambaram got his game of the tournament and did not disappoint by securing an important victory after B Adhiban gave India an early lead to the team as he beat his higher-ranked African opponent - Amin Bassem. India’s third member, Surya Ganguly, was clinical in his approach as he walked away with a win against Fawzy Adham. However, the final Indian player Krishnan Sasikiran was held to a draw by former world junior champion Ahmed Adly at the end of round three.

The Indians now trail top seeds Russia who beat defending champions, China, by a narrow 2.5-1.5 margin. Iran and Kazakhstan are placed at number three with three points each, while China is currently on the seventh spot with just two points from three matches.

In the women’s section, the Indian eves came away with a 2.5 - 1.5 win against Armenia at the end of round three of the World Team Chess Championship.  Padmini Rout found her form as she scored her first victory, while Bhakti Kulkarni also continued her good work on the last board. The Indian team will benefit from the inclusion of Tania Sachdev who will join up with the rest of the squad from the next round onwards.
