World Team Chess Championship | Indian men’s team draws with Azerbaijan; women thrash USA 4-0

The Indian men’s team drew on all boards against Azerbaijan in the ongoing World Team Chess Championship in Astana, Kazakhstan and have slipped to the third spot on the table. On the other hand, the Indian women’s team crushed the USA 4-0 to remain in contention of a podium finish.

India has now slipped to third on the points table after drawing 2-2 against Azerbaijan. B Adhiban and Surya Sekhar Ganguly both played with black pieces and ended their respective games against Arkadij Naiditsch and Safarli Eltaj respectively in a draw. SP Sethuraman’s game against Nidjat Mamedov also ended with the same result. On the last board, Krishnan Sasikiran had a slight advantage but decided to split the points in the end.

With a win against Egypt, England have moved to the second position on the table while the Russian team is at the top of it after their victory against the USA.

Meanwhile, the Indian women’s team is still in the race of getting a medal in the championship as they thrashed the United States of America (USA) 4-0. Eesha Karavade started on a positive note for the women as she won her board against Tatev Abrahamyan. Soumya Swaminathan managed to defeat Katerina Nemcova on the second board while on the next one, Padmini Rout outplayed Carissa Yip. Sabina-Francesca Foisor had no answer against Bhakti Kulkarni as the Indian came back strong against the USA opponent to ensure a 4-0 victory for them.
