The BCCI has finally given the green light for the Decision Review System to be used during the upcoming season of the IPL. India have been using the DRS in their International matches for over a year and a half now and it appears to have convinced the Indian board to debut it in IPL 2018.

The Decision Review system has been in use since 2009 when it was officially introduced in a Test Match between New Zealand and Pakistan at The Oval in Dunedin. Following a trial period of 2 years, the DRS was then introduced in the ODI format in January 2011 during Australia’s tour of England where it was made mandatory.

The system came under criticism in its initial years, but over a period of time and with advancement in technology, the system has improved drastically and the results of the reviews have become more accurate than ever. Overall, the system has been a huge success. Currently, Zimbabwe and India hold the highest success rates, at 34% and 30% respectively while Pakistan and West Indies are at the other side of the spectrum with the lowest success rates at 23% only.

After much ado, the BCCI has now given the go-ahead for the DRS to be used during the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League which is set to begin in April. What made this decision interesting is the fact that the BCCI had always maintained a stubborn stance against the DRS as they insisted that it was not foolproof. But the BCCI gave in to the trend when they agreed to use the system before England’s tour of India in 2016.

“We have the best of all other systems in place, so why not DRS? Anyway, we have been using it for India’s international matches for over a year and a half now,” a senior BCCI official said as per an Indian Express report.

The eighth edition of the IPL is slated to begin on April 7, and the return of Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings is only going to up the ante for the tournament. The addition of the DRS by the BCCI is set to lead to a lot of twists and turns during the course of the tournament which will be a delight to fans all over the globe.
