Poor officiating is not something associated with Indian cricket as much as it is with Indian football. However, Tuesday saw one such rare occurrence during the Ranji Trophy match between Delhi and Himachal Pradesh, when on-field umpire’s wrong decision infuriated Rishi Dhawan.

After Delhi garnered a competitive 317 batting first, Himachal Pradesh saw an early crumble losing six wickets for 58 runs. Their only saving grace was Dhawan, who looked comfortable at 64 off 114 balls as he was looking to forge a partnership with Ekant Sen that could have recovered the early damage.

The incident took place in the 58th over of the first innings when Varun Sood was bowling to Dhawan. The left spin bowler’s delivery from around the wicket was a fuller one that Dhawan looked to play on the front foot. The ball, however, took an unreal turn completely missing the bat and the wicketkeeper.

However, the ball, while escaping Ankush Bains, deflected off his body straight into Gautam Gambhir’s hands and he caught the catch at the slip. The umpire raised his finger instantly as the Delhi players broke into celebrations for they knew Dhawan was the last hurdle.

Dhawan couldn’t believe the decision as he stood fixed to the ground before gesturing his surprise to the atrocious call. He tried to vent his frustration by punching with his right gloves to the before starting to walk back to the pavilion. On his way, he also hit his bat with his gloves. Himachal Pradesh ended the day at 216 runs trailing by 101 runs in the first inning and eventually were all out for 226 by the 65th over on the next day.
