Vijay Hazare Trophy | Tamil Nadu, Haryana and Jharkhand register big wins in Group C
Tamil Nadu won their fifth game of Group C in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy against Assam by a huge margin of 130 runs to move up to fourth position in the group. In other games, Jharkhand and Haryana also handed crushing defeats to their opponents in the round seven encounters.
Tamil Nadu led by skipper Vijay Shankar’s 129 runs off 99 balls won their fifth Group C match against Assam at IIT Chemplast Ground in Chennai. Tamil Nadu now sit fourth on the table ahead of Services, who will play their next game tomorrow. After winning the toss and batting first, Tamil Nadu opener Abhinav Mukund (71) and wicketkeeper N Jagadeesan (37) gave a steady start to the innings. After their wickets fell, Baba Indrajith (98) and skipper Vijay Shankar (129) helped the overall score to reach 334/4.
Chasing an huge target, Assam needed a good start but were not able to get so as opener Parviz Aziz’s wicket fell in the first over itself. The Tamil Nadu bowlers then took control of the the game as four bowlers- V Yomahesh, Baba Aparajith, Varun and R Sai Kishore took 2 wickets each. Assam fell short of the target by 130 runs as they were bowled out for 202.
In another game played at T.I Murugappa Ground in Chennai, Haryana beat Rajasthan by 147 runs. After being put to bat first, Haryana were struggling at 63/3 in 17.1 overs. They managed to score 100 runs in 25 overs. The second half of the innings completely changed the course of the game as CK Bishnoi (43), HJ Rana (44) and Pramod Chandila (88) got good scores on the board. Haryana ended the innings with 304/10 on the board. H.V Patel’s 3/19 in 6 overs, alongside C.K Mishra and skipper Amit Mishra’s bowling performances helped Haryana to pack up the whole of Rajasthan’s team for mere 157 runs. A R Lamba was the lone warrior for Rajasthan with 46* off 65 balls.
A sluggish Jharkhand scraped through with a victory against bottom placed team Jammu and Kashmir. J&K after electing to field, dismissed a half of the Jharkhand team within 87 runs. A fighting performance from lower-order batsman Anukul Roy (96) led Jharkhand to a decent total of 221/8 in 50 overs. Waseem Raza picked up three wickets for 51 runs in his nine-over spell for J&K. Jharkhand then led by Shahbaz Nadeem, who came up with a five-wicket haul while conceding only 17 runs in his 10-over spell. Jharkhand restricted J&K to only 148 runs and won the game by 73 runs. Jharkhand’s bowling performance helped them keep a four-point lead over Haryana and stay at the top of the points table.
