ICC World Cup 2019 | Preparation is everything, reveals Jasprit Bumrah
Jasprit Bumrah has credited constant hard work, determination to be prepared for everything that comes his way and the desire for perfection for his tremendous success over the past few years. The pacer has had an excellent tournament so far and is currently the world’s best-ranked bowler in ODIs.
Jasprit Bumrah has made waves around the world ever since he was introduced on the global stage in 2016 when he made his debut in India’s colours against Australia. His unorthodox bowling style that features a short run-up, an erect front leg during release and a slingshot action by the arm combined with his ability to vary the pace and bowl a searing yorker at will have made him the world’s best bowler, at least in the 50-over format.
“Everything is preparation. I do it again and again in the nets. The more you do it the better you get. You can’t master it but I’m still trying to get better. It’s all about repetition. Do it again and again and try and replicate in the game,” Bumrah was reported saying by Hindustan Times.
In September 2018, Bumrah was ranked by ICC as the best bowler in ODIs and there has been no looking back since. Not only has he firmly held his spot but with each passing series and tournament, he has consolidated his position even further. He already has 99 wickets to his name in 55 ODI appearances. What is even more impressive is that he has bowled at an economy of 4.5 across so many matches, earning him the reputation of being unplayable both upfront and in the death overs.
“Whenever I practise in the nets, I practise each and every situation. Be it with the new ball, be it with the old ball, bowling at the death. So if I have ticked all the boxes in the nets it’s all about execution in the match and keeping it simple. If the work ethic is good, the execution is much easier,” Bumrah added.
In the World Cup so far, he has managed to pick 14 wickets in seven games at a brilliant average of 21. In the recent game against Bangladesh when the match was still hanging in the balance, Bumrah unleashed his fury and took two wickets off two balls courtesy pinpoint yorkers to finish off the game. He credited his experience with IPL champions Mumbai Indians for making him able to perform in such high strung situations.
“We played some tough matches in the IPL. We played until the end. So good match practice was given to us, very happy with that,” the 25-year-old signed off.
