“Evolved” Shreyas Iyer solution to our number 4 slot in limited overs, believes MSK Prasad
MSK Prasad has shared that young Shreyas Iyer has come a long way since his ODI debut as he opined that Iyer has evolved into the solution for India’s No.4 woes. The chairman of the selectors has further informed that they are close to finalising the core team for the T20 World Cup next year.
MSK Prasad, who is at the centre of almost all selection controversies in Indian cricket heading the Board of Cricket Control in India’s (BCCI) Selection Committee, is nearing the end of his tenure and has claimed that he has found the perfect No.4 for the national side. Prasad hailed young Shreyas Iyer as the solution to the No.4 woes of India.
Having made his debut in November 2017, Iyer was sidelined after a string of half-centuries against Sri Lanka before returning to the mix in the series against West Indies in 2019. Prasad opined that the Mumbai lad has come a long way since his debut to evolve into a perfect fit for the No.4 position.
“If you recall, we had inducted Shreyas Iyer (when Virat Kohli was rested) 18 months back into the ODI squad and he has done reasonably well. Unfortunately, we couldn’t continue with him. Having said that, he has evolved as a player now and he can be the solution to our number 4 slot in both ODIs and T20s,” Prasad said in an interview.
The highly-rated batsman kept piling on the runs for Mumbai in domestic cricket and also for India A besides expressing disappointment at not getting enough chances at the highest level. Now he is back in the thick of things and has done well in both ODIs and T20s since the West Indies tour.
Prasad also shared that the core team for T20 World Cup Down Under next year is almost finalised. He added that the bilateral series and IPL will be the measuring stick for a couple of slots left. The upcoming gala event is supposed to be the last assignment for the former India international.
“I think we are very close to finalising the core team. Maybe a couple of slots is what we are looking for in the next few months in the bilateral series and also in IPL,” the chief selector concluded.
