'Not on my radar at all' - Steve Smith unfazed by captaincy debate
Steve Smith is unfazed by debate about whether he should be restored to the role of Australian captain or not, saying 'Finchy and Painey doing terrific jobs'. He has also added that playing for Australia is an honour for him, and he is looking forward to playing in front of Australian crowds.
Steve Smith's tenure as Australia captain saw some highs, but the way it ended, has been a dark chapter in Australia cricket history. He has done a good job in terms of maintaining grace and dignity since his comeback which has been accompanied by a scourage of runs in England as well. That started the debate of if he should be reinstated as captain of the Aussie team, but Smith seems unfazed by it.
“Not on my radar at all. Finchy and Painey are both doing terrific jobs so I’m enjoying playing and pretty chilled," Smith told reporters on Friday, reported News.com.au.
The Sunday's game against Sri Lanka will be Smith and David Warner's first home international since serving a one-year playing ban for the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa in March last year. The duo seems ecstatic about the same, saying the comeback will be special.
“It should be good, I can’t wait to play. Any time you walk out and play for Australia it’s a great honour and to be back playing here in Australia, I’m excited,” Smith said.
“For us … we knew what we were going to tackle over there and what we were going to face (in England). And it was about keeping a smile on your face and not letting anyone rattle you. Go back probably six, seven years, it probably would have rattled me," Warner added.
"But this time, you know what to expect when you go there. The English team say the same thing when they come to Australia. So for us, it’s about focusing on the task ahead, that is playing good cricket and scoring runs.”
