Sri Lanka beat England by eight wickets to avoid a whitewash as the hosts win the series by 2-1. Bowling brilliance on the third day reduced the batters’ task to a 219-run target and Pathum Nissanka made quick work on it with an excellent century that eased the job with five sessions to spare.

Needing 125 runs to win with nine wickets and a couple of days in hand, Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis were not shy to attack on the looseners. In the process the wicketkeeper-batter found himself strolling back to the dressing room in the 20th over. Angelo Mathews survived a few close nicks before getting used to the moderate swinging conditions.

England were late to bring in Shoaib Bashir for one odd over before Drinks, falling prey to Mathews’ audacious strokes. The fifty runs partnership came up in just 68 balls with Sri Lanka reaching 161/2 in 31 overs. Soon after, Nissanka got off to his second Test ton, marking a solid comeback in the Test format. As the visitors inched closer to the target, both Nissanka and Mathews intended aerial strokes to curtail it down to five runs at the stroke of Lunch. A single followed off Bashir before Nissanka rocked back to cut a widish length ball towards the third man and save their pride with a victory by eight wickets.
