Bindra resigns from Sports Min's TOPS committee
Ace shooter Abhinav Bindra has resigned from the Sports Ministry’s Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) committee, citing insufficient time for his preparation for next year’s Rio Olympics. The 2008 Olympic gold medallist posted his resignation letter on social media.
“Due to paucity of time (the Olympic Games are 10 months away) I will not be able to make a meaningful contribution as a member to the TOPS. I don’t feel it right to continue as a member. Hence I have resigned from the committee a few minutes ago,” Bindra posted on Twitter.
Bindra, who won 10m air rifle bronze medal in the 2014 Asian Games, is one of India’s prime contenders for a medal at the Rio Olympics, and his resignation has come as another big blow to the reputation of this flagship of the Sports Ministry.
Bindra’s resignation has come just days after the Sports Ministry faced severe criticism for bureaucracy in the process of funding athletes training for Olympic qualifiers. Recently, trap shooter Ronjan Sodhi was reportedly denied funds originally sanctioned to him to train in Italy for the Olympic qualifiers. Bindra criticised the incident, saying athletes should not be subjected to such treatment.
