Shooter Kynan Chenai earns ticket to Rio Olympics
Indian shooter Kynan Chenai became the tenth Indian shooter to bag an Olympic quota after he finished fourth in the Men’s Trap event in the Asia Olympic qualifying competition at Tughlakabad, on Thursday.
The 24-year old shooter had finished third in the qualification round with a score of 120 by scoring 22, 25, 23, 25 and 25 in the five series to enter the semi-final. In the semi-final, Chenai shot 12 out of 15 to go into a four-way shoot-off for a place in the gold medal match. However, after managing only two shots on target, the Indian was forced to play in the bronze medal play-off against Talal Alrashidi, an Independent shooting participant.
In the bronze medal match, Alrashidi prevailed over Chenai by shooting 14 out of the 15 targets, with the Indian falling just short at 13. With four Olympic quotas available, Kynan Chenai won the quota by securing a fourth place finish.
Independent shooting participant Abdulrahman Al Faihan won the gold medal in the event beating Chinese Taipei’s Yang Kun-Pi.
Other Indians in the fray in Men’s trap, Manavjit Singh Sandhu and Prithviraj Tondaiman finished in the 9th (118) and 10th (117) positions respectively.
However, in the Men’s 25m Rapid Fire Pistol, 2012 Olympics silver medallist Vijay Kumar finished outside the quota places and lost out on a place to the Rio Olympics. Vijay, who had finished in the first position in the qualifying round with a score of 576, was unable to produce his best in the final and was eliminated after the fifth series of shots.
Teruyoshi Akiyama of Japan won the gold medal in the event beating South Korea’s Choi Yong Hoo.
