Jitu Rai has won his first gold medal at the ISSF World Cup in New Delhi by clinching the top position in the 50m men’s air pistol event, while Amanpreet Singh won the silver in the event. This is Jitu’s second medal in as many days after his bronze in the 10m pistol event on Tuesday.

Pretty much like the 10m pistol event yesterday, Jitu was on the brink of elimination in the eight-man final round today. At the first two-shot elimination, Jitu shot 8.2 and 9.5 and dropped to the sixth position in the table. The poor run for the former Asian champion continued in the next two-shot elimination round as well as he could manage only 8.6 and 9.2, and he remained at the last position among the six men as Atallah Alanazi (7th) and Yoshinobu Sonoda had already been eliminated in the previous round.

But, in the next eight shots, Jitu made a stunning comeback and shot six shots of more than 10 points to reach the top, overtaking his compatriot Amanpreet with two shots remaining. Amanpreet couldn’t translate his performance from earlier in the final round and shot one 9.8 and all others below nine to lose out on a gold medal.

Iran’s Vahid Golkhandan, who shot a total score of 208 points, won the bronze medal. With the Gold, Jitu has now won nine World Cup medals including two this year.
