PV Sindhu creates history; becomes first Indian to win BWF World Finals title
Indian shuttler PV Sindhu finally ended her title jinx as she defeated Japan's Nozomi Okuhara in straight games to lift her maiden BWF World Tour Finals title in Guangzhou. The world number two beat Okuhara by a scoreline of 21-19, 21-17 to emerge victorious in Sunday's encounter.
India's ace shuttler PV Sindhu has had a tough year so far, as far as luck is concerned, having made the finals on five occasions without anything to show for it. However, the world number six finally ended her title jinx to lift the BWF World Tour Finals title as she defeated Japan's Nozomi Okuhara in the final on Sunday in the Chinese city of Guangzhou.
In the past year, Sindhu achieved second-placed podium finishes in the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, and the World Championships as well finally ended that disappointing run as she dominated Okuhara in her 21-19, 21-17 win today. The highly anticipated encounter between the two athletes lived up to the up to the hype as the duo brought back memories from the unforgettable 2016 World Championship final.
The Indian shutter began the match aggressively and looked to attack her Japanese counterpart from the word go itself. However, Okuhara managed to fight back to an extent but Sindhu looked determined to seal a win in Guangzhou. The Rio Olympics medalist won vital points at crucial stages of the match against Okuhara, something that she seemed to lack in the previous finals which she participated in.
With the win, Sindhu now took a 7-6 lead over her Japanese rival in a total of 12 meetings between the two players.
