Sameer Verma performed brilliantly against Jan O Jorgensen on Sunday, winning the game 21-15, 21-13 in straight sets, to clinch men’s singles title at the Swiss Open Super 300 tournament. Verma delivered a controlled and persistent performance that saw him fighting back on both occasions.

The 23-year-old had won the Syed Modi Grand Prix Gold last year and even managed to enter in the finals of Hong Kong Super Series in 2016. And his hard work eventually bore fruition yesterday as the Madhya Pradesh player lifted his first title of the season by beating the former world No. 2.

Despite missing action for more than seven months due to a heel injury, Verma showcased terrific performance and control to finish the clash in 36 minutes. He got a three-point lead in the very beginning of the first game and kept it intact to enter the break 11-7. He didn’t give Jorgensen a single chance to come back and though, after the interval, his opponent won a video referral to reduce the gap to 10-12, Verma won the next five straight points to end the first game convincingly that lasted only 17 minutes.

The Danish ace was expected to fight back and he showed some a resilient effort to start the second game as the duo shared the first 10 points. However, Verma produced some powerful cross-court smashes that put pressure on his opponent, forcing him to make errors as Verma capitalized on them to enjoy a 11-6 lead during the break.

Jorgensen showed signs of a comeback after the break as he commanded the next two rallies well to earn two net points, but Verma was not in a mood to give up. His persistence saw him managing a 5-point lead again to make the point 14-9, as he eventually ended the game before his rival could respond.
